The last song I listened to was
Kelly’s Heroes, the fourth track on Black Grape’s 1995 album,
It’s Great When You’re Straight... Yeah! With its deep grooves, tasty guitar licks, and catchy pop hooks,
Kelly's Heroes sounds like a grittier, more dangerous version of the Happy Mondays. Don’t attempt to decipher the meaning: thanks to writer and frontman Shaun Ryder, the lyrics are a potent brew of literary references, pop culture, junk culture, drug lingo, and sheer nonsense.
Really, what can one say about a song which features the following lyrics:
Jesus was a black manNo, Jesus was BatmanNo, no, no, no, no, that was Bruce Waynewww.youtube.com/watch?v=3r8bgZRGPM4It's a weird song, but not at all in a bad sense.
Me being a bassist I couldn't help but notice right off the bat that simple but tight bass line running under everything else.
The drums are very 90s, the guitar riff and nonsensical lyrics wouldn't be out of place in the 80s and the Hammond organ overdubs and bass sound like they're from the 70s, and this weird mix works really well. I honestly enjoyed that song a lot.
I guess my last one was
Nirvana - Come As You Are since I was technically listening to it while playing it:
