When a character is [[sitting]], [[lying]], or [[kneeling]] on the surface of the earth, whether that surface be [[grass]], [[dirt]], [[sand]], [[pavement]], etc. A character on a [[beach towel]] or [[blanket]] may be considered to be on the ground.
