The third game in the [i]Dragon Quest[/i] series, originally released in 1988 for the [[Famicom]] and later brought to North America (as [i]Dragon Warrior III[/i]) in 1991. Enhanced remakes have since been made for the [[Super Famicom]] and [[Game Boy Color]], though only the latter was released outside of Japan.

This game was the first to include a gender option for the main player-character. It also introduced character classes to the series: [[soldier_(dq3)|soldier]], [[priest_(dq3)|priest]], [[mage_(dq3)|mage]], [[fighter_(dq3)|fighter]], [[merchant_(dq3)|merchant]], [[jester_(dq3)|jester]], and [[sage_(dq3)|sage]]. The Super Famicom remake introduced an additional [[thief_(dq3)|thief]] class.
