The FAL (Fusil Automatique Léger, "Light Automatic Rifle") is a Belgian-designed selective-fire rifle firing the 7.62x51mm cartridge. It was developed between 1947-1953 by Dieudonné Saive at Fabrique Nationale de Herstal. Known as "the right arm of the Free World", it was the second most widely used military rifle in the world (after the AK-47) during the Cold War, being used by 77 different nations. It was nearly adopted by the United States Army as well, but was ultimately rejected in favor of the American-designed M14. Identifying characteristics include the overall length of the weapon, a fixed buttstock, the shape and location of the flash hider and front sight post, and barrel length exposed before the perforated handguard (useful for differentiating it from Heckler & Koch weapons of similar profile, such as the H&K G3|G3). Due to the wide number of nations that adopted the FAL, there are numerous variations from the standard design, the most notable being the British L1A1, Austrian StG 58, and the distinctive Israeli Romat.
