h4. Appearance

In comparison to samuel b. roberts (kancolle)|Samuel B. Roberts, Johnston is depicted as much taller and medium_breasts|slightly more well-endowed with long_hair|long pinkish light brown hair tied into a two side up style and brown eyes.

She wears a stylized serafuku which consists of an off shoulder|off-shoulder blue shirt with a black sailor collar that exposes her cleavage and short black skirt|black pleated skirt, along with black legwear|black thighhighs held by garter straps with what seem to be metallic thigh and shin guards and red rudder footwear|rudder shoes. Johnston's damaged CG has her stripped of some of her clothing, revealing a bit of her black underwear.

On her left hand she wears a single glove|single black gloves|black glove, an oblique reference to the injuries to the left hand sustained by her captain, "Lieutenant Commander Ernest E. Evans":[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_E._Evans], including losing two fingers. Draped on her left upper arm is the united states medal of honor|Medal of Honor, presumably similar to the one posthumously awarded to Lieutenant Commander Evans for his actions in the "Battle off Samar":[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_off_Samar].

Her machinery consists of two smokestacks and two 5-inch cannon turrets with one set on each side of her rigging, with a third adapted turret|handheld turret on her right hand. Her hull number is emblazoned on each side of her lower rigs.

She is often compared to amatsukaze (kancolle)|Amatsukaze due to both having similar two side up hairstyles and sailor outfits with gartered thighhighs as well as apparently sharing similar tsundere personalities.

The historical destroyer was part of the Taffy 3 party (which included samuel b. Roberts (kancolle)|Samuel B. Roberts and gambier bay (kancolle)|Gambier Bay) and was sunk during the "Battle off Samar":[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_off_Samar] by successive firings from Kurita Takeo's forces, but not before scoring hits of her own, including those to kumano (kancolle)|Kumano. For her actions, she was given a Presidential Unit Citation and six battle stars, which shipgirl Johnston displays as one bronze star and one silver star (equivalent to five bronzes) on her collar.

She's voiced by "Shiraki Nao":myanimelist.net/people/42439 and was designed by Zeco. Her namesake is "Navy Lieutenant John V. Johnston":[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_V._Johnston], who fought for the Union from 1862 to 1864 during the American Civil War. She is the game's first bona fide American destroyer, despite the fact that destroyer escort samuel b. roberts (kancolle)|Samuel B. Roberts was already classified as a destroyer in the game.
