Latin: Psittacus erithacus JP: ヨウム yōmu A medium-sized parrot with a grey body, black bill, red tail and pale face. The African grey is native to equatorial Africa. It can live 40-60 years in captivity, where it is renowned for its intelligence on par with that of great apes and other species. Under enriched learning conditions (see "Alex" link below), grey parrots have been known to functionally use human language; however, they are extremely demanding pets, and will damage themselves if not kept in a sufficiently stimulating environment. Unfortunately, the wild population is endangered and undergoing rapid decline, due in part to poaching for trade. h4.
