Derpy Hooves is a gray and blond pegasus from "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" who has a very strange story behind her creation. While making the first episode of the series, an unknown animator altered a background pony's eyes to be facing in different directions and to have a silly, scrunched-up facial expression. This character was originally going to be out of view, but the background was moved sometime during production. Shortly after the episode aired and the show gained its first adult fans, a user on an American-hosted image board pointed out this oddity. Immediately, speculation and debate started, and it was agreed that this pony would be called Derpy Hooves after the internet meme "derp," which is an exclamation made by someone who realizes that they have made a dumb mistake or to mock someone who hasn't realized their mistake. Several episodes later, she was shown with a normal facial expression and straight eyes drooling over a plate of free muffin samples, adding an aspect to her personality. When the show's adult fanbase grew further, the crew of the show began to take notice and interact with the fans. They discussed released and upcoming episodes, and it was revealed that Derpy was similar to a character that was in planning called Ditzy Doo. The crew hadn't finalized the design of this character, so they agreed to use Derpy's walleyed appearance for this character. They began to alter episodes that hadn't been finished yet and about midway through the first season Derpy began to make cameo appearances. Partway through the second season, Derpy was mentioned by name and had over a minute of dialogue. Fans were pleased and excited, though there was a mixed reaction to her voice, which some people thought sounded too deep. Shortly afterwards, the season was delayed by a week to make edits to the episode. The studio had received a small number of complaints that Derpy seemed like a stereotypical depiction of a mentally retarded person, though most fans stated the episode was fine the way it was. The episode was re-released with the scene altered to have new dialogue without the character's name and Derpy's eyes uncrossed. Fans complained that the new dialogue seemed rushed and poorly acted, but the studio stood by their decision because they realized that the term "derp" might spread to young children, and because the voice actress for her character was confused and thought the character was supposed to be a boy. h4.
