h4. Personality
Ashigara is a shipgirl well-known for her obsession with victory, almost on a level equivalent to Sendai's obsession with night battles. She is nicknamed Hungry Wolf, which was (allegedly) given during the naval review celebrating King George VI's coronation where she was Japan's representative. Because of this nickname, it's not uncommon to draw her with [[wolf ears]] and/or [[fangs]].

A running gag on [[4chan]] and [[Futaba Channel]] is that she is a "Christmas Cake"; a woman above 25 who for whatever reason is unable to find a candidate for marriage, a reference to how she was named the Hungry Wolf and her namesake mountain's association with the folk hero "Kintaro":[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintar%C5%8D] who was raised in Mount Ashigara by a "Yama-uba":https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yama-uba , or in other words, a Mountain Hag. Like the "Nagamon" meme, this fan-created joke was featured in the anime.

h4. History
In real life, Ashigara was the fourth and last (or third according to some sources) of the Myoukou-class heavy cruisers, representing Japan in the Coronation Review of King George VI in 1937. Her epithet of Hungry Wolf allegedly came from this time as remarks by [[Royal Navy]] sailors with regards to her living conditions, described as "Spartan" compared to those of other navies in attendance.

She served mostly on convoy and troop transport duties for the rest of 1942 up to mid-1944, missing out most naval actions. On 7 June 1945, she departed Jakarta with [[Kamikaze (Kancolle)|]] to ferry troops to Singapore when she was sunk by a Royal Navy submarine. Kamikaze rescued 853 crew and around 400 army troops and brought them to Singapore.
