Listening to a conversation in which the listener is not directly involved. Usually done in a room separate from where the conversation is taking place. The word comes from the practice of using eavesdrops (gutters that catch rainwater from the eaves of a house) to listen to other people's conversations. Not to be confused with [[voyeurism]].
