V4 A fan character (sometimes called "original character" or "OC" in fandom communities) is a character that is based off of a franchise, series, or other copyright, but is not a canon character. Most traditional furry characters do not need this tag because they aren't created and based off of an existing franchise, movie, game, comic, etc.

Note: Popular fanon ("fan canon") characters should get this tag to differentiate them from canon.

A few of the popular franchises which people make fan characters for include:
[[My Little Pony]] (specifically [[Friendship is Magic]])
[[Sonic the Hedgehog]]
[[Pokémon]] ([[fakémon]])
...and countless other books, movies, cartoons, games, and other intellectual properties (or IPs).
