Gems are an extraterrestrial species of "magical", roughly humanoid beings made of light projected by their gemstone that play a key role in the Steven Universe franchise. They are divided into other subspecies, each with their own unique powers and weapons, but they all have some base abilities to some extent, like shapeshifting, regeneration, gem fusion and overall superhuman physical characteristics.

Steven Quartz Universe, Nora Quartz Universe, and their fusions with other gems or humans are the only officially known gem hybrids, made of light and human matter. Steven is the first gem to use he/him pronouns and consider himself male, followed by Rainbow Quartz 2.0 and Steg_(Steven_Universe): all the other official gems use she/her pronouns and consider themselves female by default.
