Public Domain refers to any work not subject to copyright, either due to never being copyrighted in the first place or copyright's expired, such as Mickey Mouse (though only his Steamboat Willie iteration). The majority of religions (Notable Scientology is an exception), fine art, and just about anything produced before 1920, are considered to be in the public domain.
